Decorating with Fabric has sourced a large collection of Green, Organic and Sustainable Fabrics from around the globe.
Recycled Polyester
Synthetic fibers are the most popular fibers in the world – it’s estimated that synthetics account for about 65% of world production versus 35% for natural fibers.
Most synthetic fibers (approx 70%) are made from polyester, and the polyester most often used in textiles is polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Using Recycled Bottles
The reason recycled polyester (rPET) is considered a green option in textiles today is twofold:
1) Energy needed to make the rPET is less than what was needed to make the virgin polyester in the first place, so we save energy.
2) We’re keeping bottles and other plastics out of the landfills.

Fabrics
These fabrics have been designed to utilize “green” components that minimize this collection’s environmental impact. From reduction in water consumption and yarn waste, to energy conservation and use of wind power, each step in the production of the fabrics in this collection has been carefully executed to maintain the health and well being of our planet.
Fabric Content:
Recyclable Polyester - At the end of a fabric’s life, Recyclable Polyester can be recovered and recycled to create new raw material for future products.
Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester - The Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester yarns are made from recycled plastic bottles. (16 20oz. bottles = 1 yard of fabric).
Post-Industrial/Pre-Consumer Recycled Polyester Post-Industrial/Pre-Consumer Recycled Polyester yarns are made from plastic chips that have been rejected from bottle companies during the process of making bottles for consumers.
Wide Spec Polyester - Fibers are produced using a “Wide Spec Polyester chip” that maximizes the value of waste materials throughout the manufacturing process, therefore minimizing the amount of waste at the end of the process.
Organic Cotton - Sustainable, rapidly renewable, and biodegradable fiber that has been grown through a carefully guided and strictly regulated process without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Organic cotton is also naturally hypoallergenic.
Bamboo/Bamboo Rayon - Sustainable, rapidly renewable and biodegradable fiber made from bamboo plants that are replenished without environmental impact. It is also naturally hypoallergenic.
Hemp - Sustainable, renewable and biodegradable, hemp requires little to no pesticides or herbicides, it controls erosion of the topsoil, and produces oxygen.
Flax - Sustainable, renewable and biodegradable, naturally grown flax fiber is soft, lustrous and flexible. It is stronger than cotton fiber but less elastic. Most linen fabrics are made from flax fiber.
Sustainable Fabric Finishes
Sustain - The Sustain finish is environmentally safe and non-toxic. Fabrics treated using the Sustain finish are stain resistant against corn oil, mustard, ketchup, and chocolate. Sustain does not change the fabric texture, color or appearance.
GreenShield™ - GreenShield™ minimizes use of harmful flurochemicals, as well as the consumption of energy throughout the finishing process, in addition to eliminating water and volatile organic chemicals and solvents. GreenShield™ is certified for indoor air quality and features enhanced recyclability while delivering superior water repellency.

SUSTAINABLE SILK FABRIC
The fabric is hand woven in India using individual family weavers that are directly supporting. Mulberry leaves that are fed to the silkworms, are organically fertilized with compost from Neem trees that are grown among the Mulberry trees. Fabrics are made on hand made wooden looms - some of which are at least 100 years old. No electrical energy is used in the spinning, weaving or dying process, leaving a zero carbon foot print. Painstaking weaving by hand - only 4 yards of silk is produced per day per loom.
We offer the largest color selection of SUSTAINABLE and HAND WOVEN SILK DUPIONI. Double Lined using USA grown ORGANIC cotton - Drapes are lined with ORGANIC Cotton SATEEN and INTERLINED with Organic cotton FLANNEL. Here is some in-depth information about the processes that go into making the raw yarns.
What is Organic Cotton?
Organic agriculture is an ecological production management system that promotes and enhances bio diversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. It is based on minimal use of off-farm inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony. The primary goal of organic agriculture is to optimize the health and productivity of interdependent communities of soil life, plants, animals and people.
Organic NEEM fertilizer and pest prevention
ORGANIC NEEM is used as a fertilizer. It was discovered that the NEEM TREE was the only living plant not devastated by the Sudanese Locust Plague, in 1957. The seeds and organic compost made from the Neem Tree to fertilize the Mulberry trees that are used to hand rear the Bombyx Morii silk worms. Also by using mostly natural dyes, we create a SUSTAINABLE silk product. Our fabrics are woven in cottage industry and we directly support the families that weave our cloth.
Double Nested Cocoons
Sometimes known as dupion or douppioni, silk dupioni is a shimmering silk that is created by weaving silk threads of two different colors into a weave that seems to change colors as the silk is moved around in different lights. Constructed with threads made from rough silk fibers that are harvested from double cocoons or single cocoons that are spun side by side and interlocked, silk dupioni generally employs a set of vibrant colors in the weave. Along with creating the shimmering effect, the choice of two different colors of rough silk fiber helps to create a crisp drape quality to the finished fabric.
Silk dupioni has an advantage over some other types of silks, in that dupioni tends to resist wrinkles, which helps to enhance the usability of the finished fabric. In addition, silk dupioni also has a tendency to take creases very well, which can give the final product a crisp and formal appearance. As an added bonus, silk dupioni is totally reversible, so it is perfectly acceptable for both sides of the material to be visible.
The Silk Dupioni is made ONLY from double nested cocoons. At this stage we can only offer our Silk Dupioni Solid fabric the Organic linings due to the fact that only this silk is hand dyed using organic compounds. Our other more complicated stripes and plaids are dyed in commercial labs and do not qualify.
