I spent Thursday and Friday on the Exhibitor's floor and stopped by a few of the educational seminars. It was two good days and I was very surprised at the positive attitude of both attendees and exhibitors. My expectations were not very high due my opinion of last year's show. But I have to say I was very happy to see people enthused and an upswing in traffic and attitudes about our industry. We survived and we are staging a strong comeback.

Most conspicuos were the people and companies not here. Such great vendors as Hunter Douglas, Springs, Ado, Rollease and others who chose not to exhibit. In my opinion this is a mistake. I understand the arguments of "return on investment" but as Jay Helser of Helser Brothers says, "You can't imagine all the positive intangibles I receive from the exhibiting at this show. It's the one-to-one encounters that develop into long term profitable relationships". This is a big part of why the "majors" should be here not to mention it would be nice to see them support the industry in our only national trade show event.

I am in this industry for over 25 years. I have seen all sorts of trends and relationships that were once important and are not anymore. Remember when the "Big Box" stores were taking over? We fought with our major suppliers not to sell to them, but they did and we were angry over it. But these "Big Box" stores did not succeed in driving us from the business. We were here before they existed and we are still here today. We are the ones attending the seminars and visiting the booths these past few days in Atlanta. Majors, where are you?

Margi Kyle, The Designing Doctor told me when I asked her about the missing in action from the show: "If you don't appear, you disappear".

People traveled from great distances to attend the show. My friend Cindy Laws from Bermuda is here taking seminars and scouring the floor for exciting new products.

I asked Sarah Youngblood with Exciting Windows! located right here in Atlanta why she comes to the show and she explained that it's a chance to reconnect with friends and suppliers and would travel if the show was not local.

I did attend Deb Barrett's seminar called "Transform Custom to Couture". What a great seminar! I have been in the Drapery Workroom business for over 25 years and I thought I knew it all. Cut me a piece a humble pie, I must have learned a dozen new things from Deb that I will use in my workroom. Thanks Deb!

I did see some new products on the floor. There is Masterpiece Shutters a new company from upstate New York that creates shutters with either beautiful carvings or printed with exciting graphics.

From Los Angeles, California comes HueArt, a window shade company with oversized graphics chosen from a huge catologue.

There were many more great product introductions from such companies as Comfortex, Mechoshade, Phifer, Forest and many more.

Next year will be in Tampa. I hope to see you there!

Neil, I, too, was at the IWCE in Atlanta this week. The seminars were absolutely fabulous! I wish there had been time to take each seminar. I have read the descriptions and handouts from each one and they were all chocked full of wisdom from their presenters. I will study the handouts and keep them for reference. I also share your dissappointment in the non-support of many of our vendors this year. I was extremely dssappointed that our major fabric suppliers, Robert Allen, Fabricut, Kasmir, Kravet and on and on were not there. The ones that were there showing were great! But, the big names were not there. I think we, as designers and workrooms, should make our voices heard to our supplies and let them know the disappointment we feel in them. My hat is off to Grace McNamara and her team. What a wonderful job - as usual.

Vision 10 IWCE was great...classes, showroom, energy & meeting old friend and making new ones. So disappointing, as both you & Carol said, not to see the big name vendors there. Will they die like Artmark Fabrics did because they are letting us forget they exist?

Great to see you at the show, Neil. DraperyPro exhibited, as we have done for the past 13 years. Yes, the show was smaller, but the enthusiasm was there and so were many familiar faces. Hats off to all the vendors who participated and all the attendees who came to learn and seek out the products that will keep them "in the know."

We're keeping a positive outlook and look forward to Tampa next year. It's up to every one of us to keep our industry moving in a forward direction--whether or not the bigger companies participate. This is the chance for those smaller companies to make a big statement and stand out! It's never been easier to create a buzz with new media at our fingertips. Thanks to Grace McNamara and her Vision10 team to offer this important window coverings trade show. We'll be in Tampa--let's plan to make it a great show!

VISION 10, the IWCE, was terrific for me, despite it being a smaller show. I still took seminars from Wed. through Saturday, still had to scramble around on the show floor when I was not in classes, and loved networking with others in our field. Today, we have the chance in networking to follow each other on Facebook, follow each other's blogs, Twitter feed, Linked in, and so on, and continue to learn from one another.

I was also blown away by the brand new Masterpiece shutters, which I found on the last day, and finally realized why so many others are excited about Helser brothers. I loved the new Persona shade patterns. The Somfy motorized sample offer to those at the show was fabulous; and Anna Davies gave me some pointers on using my Minutes Matter Studio program in a one on one session (at no charge). Of course I loved being recognized in the Envision Design competition, but I also learned some new ideas from some of the other award winners. Coming back from the IWCE always pays off for me in sales as well, as my excitement and new ideas and resources is contagious!

We flew in from Houston for the show and were glad we did. It is always beneficial to our business to re-energize with new products and information for our clients. It's that extra effort that sets us apart from our competition, especially in these economic times. It was great getting updated tweets along the way- loved that! We will see you in Tampa next year!
